A highlight of this volume is a chapter on John Benson’s career as an architect, beginning with his sojourn in Paris in 1888 to study at an atelier and at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The chapter attempts to place Mr. Benson in an historical context, the remarkable “Gilded Age,” as it came to be known in American social history.
