Like its predecessors, Volumes I, II and III of The Artistic Legacy of John Prentiss Benson, this electronic version of Volume IV is intended to serve as a reference source. It takes up where the first three left off and is the result of new information about John Benson’s work that has come to light since the publication of Volume III in June of 2007.

John Benson was a prolific painter, especially in view of the fact he did not become a full-time, self-supporting artist until he was in his 50s. The Alphabetical Listing of paintings in Volume I had 612 titles. That increased to 735 in Volume II and, finally, just over 750 in Volume III. It is believed, therefore, that he may have created as many as 800 paintings during his lifetime.

Volume IV will feature images of paintings that have come to the editors’ attention after the deadline for Volume III had passed. This fourth book will appear only online and be used, as appropriate, to showcase additional information about John Prentiss Benson that will be of unusual and general interest.
